Handbrakes, or emergency brakes, differ from your typical brake. Instead of being connected to your wheels by hydraulic means, handbrakes are attached by a cable and a sprocket to the rear tires.


The way handbrakes are attached helps reduce the chance for failure. The handbrake works by using the pressure you apply to create tension in wire and close the brake pads on the wheels. There is a pin in the handle which locks the sprocket, which is why a button must be pushed to release the handbrake
