A distributor is an enclosed rotating shaft used mainly in internal combustion engines that have mechanically-timed ignition.
The main function of the distributor is to route secondary current from the ignition coil to the spark plugs at the right time and in the correct order, ensuring proper firing of the cylinders to drive the engine.
Most distributors also have a mechanical or inductive breaker switch, which opens and closes the ignition coil’s primary circuit to control the flow of electricity.
